The Philadelphia Museum of Art currently administers two colonial houses, Cedar Grove and Mount Pleasant. Two new programs taking place at these extraordinary homes provide students with a first-hand glimpse of life in the eighteenth century.
-
Cedar Grove
Cedar Grove was the family home for five generations of the Coates, Paschall, and Morris families of Philadelphia. Colonial Life at Cedar Grove is an interactive program for elementary students, grades 3–6. Students experience both work and leisure activities of the eighteenth century as they tour the house and garden. Thursdays, 10:00–11:20 a.m. -
Mount Pleasant
Middle and high school students can participate in a new program, Discover Classical Architecture at Mount Pleasant, an eighteenth-century mansion in Fairmount Park. In this currently unfurnished home, students review the basic classical orders, observe craftsmen's tools, and learn about creating and designing a grand country home. Each student creates his or her own design for the "missing" mantel piece in the Upstairs Parlor. Tuesdays, 10:00–11:30 a.m.
