During a trip to visit his family in Rouen, France, Duchamp was inspired by a chocolate grinder in a confectioner's window. The machine consists of three drums that rotate to crush bars of chocolate into cocoa powder. An example of Duchamp's fascination with mechanical devices, the chocolate grinder would reappear several times in the artist's work.
