Modern and Contemporary Art Chocolate Grinder (No. 1) 1913 Marcel Duchamp, American (born France), 1887 - 1968 Oil on canvas * Gallery 168, Modern and Contemporary Art, first floor (Kaiserman Gallery) 1950-134-69 The Louise and Walter Arensberg Collection, 1950 |
Gallery LabelDuring a trip to visit his family in Rouen, France, Duchamp was inspired by a chocolate grinder in a confectioner's window. The machine consists of three drums that rotate to crush bars of chocolate into cocoa powder. An example of Duchamp's fascination with mechanical devices, the chocolate grinder would reappear several times in the artist's work.* Works in the collection are moved off view for many different reasons. Although gallery locations on the website are updated regularly, there is no guarantee that this object will be on display on the day of your visit. |
